Gas Prices Continue Slide

Gasoline prices continued their two-month slide this week, dropping another eight cents a gallon in the Los Angeles area for the week ending Oct. 2, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The average price of self-serve regular gas in the Los Angeles Long Beach area stood at $2.69 a gallon on Monday, 56 cents a gallon less than just two weeks ago and 28 cents less than a year ago. Nationwide, the average price per-gallon fell to $2.31 a gallon, down nearly seven cents in the past week.

In less than a month, the average retail price of a gallon of gas has shed more than 72 cents nationwide and 63 cents a gallon here in California. Industry experts expect the trend to continue as U.S. oil inventories remain well above average and ample global supplies continue to ease concern about world oil production.

The continued fall in the price of light, sweat crude, which accounts for about half of the total price of gas, has also played a large roll in the decrease in gas prices. After hitting a high near $80 a barrel in mid-July, U.S. light sweet crude futures were down more than $2 a barrel to $59.41 on Tuesday.
