Disney to Develop In-House Games

Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday that it is creating a video-game studio to make titles exclusively for Nintendo Co.

The studio, called Fall Line, will develop games that feature Disney’s animated characters and will be based in Salt Lake City. The Disney games will be made exclusively for Nintendo’s new “Wii” console as well as the “DS” and “Game Boy” handheld players. Disney said it views Nintendo as an ideal partner for such a venture, because Nintendo users are typically younger than other video game players.

The Burbank-based entertainment company has spent $200 million in the past two years to buy or start game-development studios and expects to spend another $200 million over the next two years. The company has more than doubled its video-game payroll staff to more than 600 employees total over the past year and a half

Shares in Disney were up 20 cents to $32.66 in early trading Tuesday.
