Stocks Fall on Rate Worries

Stocks finished an erratic session lower Tuesday, with a conflicting report on wholesale inflation and questions about the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy creating uncertainty for investors.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 39.06, or 0.4 percent, to 11,235.47. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slipped 7.85, or 0.6 percent, to 1,297.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 19.88, or 0.9 percent, to 2,294.23.

Local movers were led by Diodes Inc., which gained 3.4 percent to $39.52, Hilton Hotels Corp., which rose 1.6 percent to $24.65, and K-Swiss Inc., which climbed 1.3 percent to $29.81. On the down side, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. fell 3.3 percent to $82.37, Arden Group Inc. lost 2.2 percent to $84.01 and True Religion Apparel Inc. slipped 7.8 percent to $17.91.
