L.A. Gas Prices Move Higher Again

Gasoline prices in Los Angeles resumed their upward march fueled by surging demand by summertime vacation driver after freezing in place the week before, said the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area rose 2.5 cents to $2.604 on Friday from $2.579 one week ago, when it didn’t rise. The price was $2.490 per gallon one month ago and $2.135 one year prior.

“After showing weakness in June and part of July, demand for gasoline has shot up to a level that is 3 percent higher than last summer,” said Auto Club spokeswoman Carol Thorp. “It’s likely that there will be more increases at the pump, so record-high prices set in the spring might be eclipsed within the next week.”

The Orange County area under-priced the Riverside San Bernardino area to take back the honor of having the lowest average price in Southern California, edging up 2.4 cents to $2.582. While the Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest gas price, rising 1.8 cents to $2.696, San Diego gained 2.9 cents to $2.639 to set a new record-high price for the area. None of the areas surveyed has done that since late April.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m. each Friday.
