Retailers Post Mixed Sales Results

Retail sales slowed last month as the reappearance of winter weather after a warm January chilled consumers’ interest in spring apparel.


Based on a tally of 57 retailers, 53 percent missed expectations; the remaining 47 percent beat or met estimates, according to Thomson Financial. The sales tally is up 2.9 percent, in line with forecasts, but the results were helped by Wal-Mart, which accounts for half the index’s weight. The tally is based on business at stores open at least a year, known as same-store sales, which are considered the best indicator of a retailer’s health.
