‘Cars,’ ‘Nacho Libre’ Take in Top Box Office

Pixar and Disney’s “Cars” topped the weekend box office charts with $31.2 million, but just barely. The animated feature made a sharp decline from its numbers of the previous week, and as a result “Nacho Libre” came in a close second with $27.5 million in receipts, Daily Variety reported.

Calpers Considers Benefit Cuts

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System is proposing to reduce benefits for hundreds of thousands of its members to address soaring health care costs. The proposals will be considered Tuesday at a meeting in Sacramento, the Los Angeles Times reported. Plans include raising co-pays and lowering premiums for subscribers in smaller networks of doctors. Officials said the changes are designed to cut costs without sacrificing quality, but public employees’ unions vigorously oppose the plans.

Regulators Seek to Roll Back Accounting Rules

California officials have begun to undo consumer protection rules adopted after Enron’s collapse, according to watchdog groups and state lawmakers. The Los Angeles Times reported that the state Board of Accountancy, which licenses CPAs and firms, is taking steps to loosen standards for audit documents. The board is pushing a bill that could open the door for out-of-state accountants to offer tax shelters and practice in California without oversight that’s currently required.
