Business Journal Wins Accolades From Press Club

The Los Angeles Business Journal received three awards at Los Angeles Press Club’s 48th annual Southern California Journalism Awards event.


Managing Editor Laurence Darmiento received first place in the under 100,000 circulation business category for a profile of billionaire Eli Board entitled “Philanthropist’s Path.” The judges found the article to be well researched, with multiple sources.


In the special section category for newspapers with a circulation under 100,000, Andy Fixmer and staff garnered the top prize for a piece called “Who Owns Downtown?”


The Business Journal also was awarded honorable mention in the business category for “CEOs Under Siege” by Hilary Potkewitz, Kate Berry, Howard Fine, James Nash and Laurence Darmiento.


Mark Lacter, former editor of the Los Angeles Business Journal, was a finalist for signed commentaries in newspapers with circulations of fewer than 100,000. The newspaper’s staff had another finalist contender in the special section category for its package entitled “Wealthiest Angelenos Doing the Deal.”


The awards event took place at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel on June 24. TV personality Larry King spoke and was lauded with the President’s Award for his impact on the media.


Another key honor was given to Yahoo News foreign correspondent Kevin Sites, who was given the Daniel Pearl Award for courage and integrity. CBS reporter Dave Lopez, who has covered Orange County for nearly 30 years, was given the Joseph M. Quinn Award for journalistic excellence and distinction.
