A number of positive earnings reports renewed confidence in stocks Thursday and sent the major indexes higher as investors shook off a steep loss posted by General Motors Corp.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 99.73, or 0.9 percent, to 10,809.47. The S & P; 500 gained 9.15, or 0.7 percent, to 1,273.83. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 22.35, or 1 percent, to 2,283.00.

Local movers were led by FirstFed Financial Corp., which gained 4.4 percent to $64.85, Diodes Inc., which jumped by 7.7 percent to $36.40, and Keystone Automotive Industries Inc., which climbed 6.8 percent to $37.28. On the down side, shares of Amgen Inc. dipped 4.7 percent to $71.90 and National Mercantile Bancorp fell 3.6 percent to $17.35.
