L.A. Gas Prices Rising at Slower Rate

L.A. gas prices have risen for the third straight week, but at a slower rate, indicating that pump prices may be reaching a temporary plateau, said the Automobile Club of Southern California. Prices this week rose between 2 and 5 cents per gallon; last week, they spiked 15 cents to nearly 17 cents in most areas.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area climbed 4.6 cents to $2.450 on Friday from $2.404 one week ago. Last Friday, they soared 16.6 cents. The price was $2.250 per gallon one month ago and $1.979 one year prior. Prices haven’t hit a new record high since Sept. 6.

“Motorists might see prices stabilize over the next week or two, but that could only be a temporary pause,” Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp said. “Upward pressure on gas prices will increase in February due to reduced production as refineries rush to finish the changeover from producing winter grade to summer grade fuel before the March 1 deadline.”

The Orange County area had the lowest average price in Southern California, rising 3.1 cents to $2.408. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest gas price, edging up 3.1 cents to $2.592.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline each Friday.
