Stocks Up for Third Session

Stocks extended their New Year’s rally to a third session Thursday, edging higher in erratic trading as the tech sector rebounded on bullish news from chip maker Xilinx Inc.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.00, or 0.02 percent, to 10,882.15. The S & P; 500 edged up 0.02, or virtually unchanged, to 1,273.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 13.41, or 0.6 percent, to 2,276.87.

Local movers were led by Digital Insight Corp., which gained 6.9 percent to $36.51. On the down side, Amgen Inc. slipped 1.5 percent to $78.82 and Superior Industries International Inc. fell 4.5 percent to $21.13.


Shares of Computer Sciences Corp. rose 7.9 percent to $54.81 after the Wall Street Journal reported Blackstone Group and Hewlett-Packard Co. are exploring a possible buyout of the El Segundo-based computer services company. Talks are at a preliminary stage and could still fail, the newspaper said.


True Religion Apparel Inc. soared 15.1 percent to $19.40 after the L.A.-based denim maker’s stock rating was rated “buy” in new coverage by Sterne, Agee & Leach. The price target was set at $23 per share.


Guess Inc. rose 4.9 percent to $38.81 after the L.A.-based apparel maker said its December sales at stores open at least one year rose 17.5 percent. Total retail sales last month for the L.A.-based apparel maker jumped 27.4 percent to $103.4 million.


DaVita Inc. climbed 4.7 percent to $54.25 after the El Segundo based dialysis services company’s stock rating was raised to “overweight” from “equal-weight” by Morgan Stanley.
