L.A. Gas Prices Down for Second Week

Gas prices in the Los Angeles area fell for the second consecutive week on Friday after six weeks of increases as refineries flooded the market with the last supplies of winter blend fuel, said the Automobile Club of Southern California. Refineries are prohibited from selling winter grade fuel after Feb. 28.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area slipped 4.8 cents to $2.522 on Friday. Last Friday, they fell .6 cents to $2.570. The price was $2.455 per gallon one month ago and $2.196 one year prior. Prices haven’t hit a new record high since Sept. 6.

“Refiners are selling off all supplies of winter grade fuel in advance of next Tuesday’s deadline. That has put extra supply on the market, sending prices lower,” said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. “Motorists can expect to see prices stay near current levels for a couple of weeks. After that, with the extra winter grade supply used up, motorists should expect more upward pressure on retail gas prices.”

The Orange County area had the lowest average price in Southern California, losing 5.2 cents to $2.481. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest gas price even with a decrease of 4.3 cents to $2.663.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline each Friday.
