L.A. Gas Dips After Weeks of Increases

Gas prices in the Los Angeles area slipped on Friday from last week, giving motorists some relief from a trend of higher prices that lasted six consecutive weeks, said the Automobile Club of Southern California.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area fell 3.6 cents to $2.570 on Friday. Last Friday, they edged up 1.6 cents to $2.606. The price was $2.450 per gallon one month ago and $2.159 one year prior. Prices haven’t hit a new record high since Sept. 6.

“Gasoline prices are falling because refineries are flooding the market with their remaining inventories of winter-grade fuel, which happens every year at this time,” said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. “The slight downward trend should continue for a couple of weeks. Refineries begin shipping summer-grade fuel on March 1st. After then, motorists can expect to see prices turn upward again.”

The Orange County area had the lowest average price in Southern California, losing 3.2 cents to $2.533. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest gas price even with a decrease of 3.2 cents to $2.706.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline each Friday.
