Activision to Cut Work Force

Activision Inc. said it will cut more than 6 percent of its global work force amid struggles to weather a rocky transition to new video-game technology, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The Santa Monica-based videogames publisher began laying off employees in the U.S. and Europe last week. Activision has a work force of about 2,200, meaning the cuts would translate into a reduction of about 150 employees, the Journal said.

Activision will pay severance to workers at “industry standard” rates, and some of the layoffs will affect some the company’s game development employees, TheStreet.com reported.

Activision suffered disappointing third-quarter earnings as gamers postponed buying titles while they await new game consoles. Activision reported a 30 percent drop in net income to $67.9 million (23 cents per share) from $97.3 million (35 cents) in the same period a year earlier.

The company also said in earnings last week that it now expects a fourth-quarter net loss of 7 cents to 9 cents per share and full-year earnings of 9 cents to 11 cents per share. Both are below analysts’ estimates.
