Virco Manufacturing Corp. continued the positive trend of the first two quarters of the year by reporting solid third quarter earning, sending its stock up more than 34 percent.

Virco reported third quarter net income of $5.8 million, reversing a $2.2 million loss for the same period a year earlier.

Sales for the Torrance-based furniture manufacturer were up 4.5 percent to $73.7 million. The company attributed the improved performance to selling prices catching up to escalating raw material costs; effective cost cuts from three restructurings, and increased demand for Virco’s furniture, fixtures and equipment for K-12 learning environments.

Shares in Virco soared $2.23 to $8.64 in early trading Friday.
