Los Angeles County has raised its living wage for contractors for the first time in seven years.
The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve the motion from Supervisors Gloria Molina and Yvonne Braithwaite Burke. The county’s living wage covers an estimated 6,500 contract workers.
As of Jan. 1, all employers that contract with the county and do not offer benefits must pay $11.84 an hour, up from $9.46 an hour. All employers that do offer benefits for their workers must pay $9.64 an hour, up from the $8.32 an hour.
Unlike the City of Los Angeles, which passed its living wage law in 1997 and recently decided to extend it to hotels near Los Angeles International Airport, the county’s living wage is not indexed to inflation. As part of the package approved Tuesday, the county board mandated an annual review of the adequacy of the wage.
