If you have one of those overbearing, micromanaging bosses and hold onto hope that surging gas prices and snarled traffic might finally force him to think about telecommuting think again.

According to a new survey, which polled 150 executives picked from the nation’s top 1,000 companies, only 5 percent of the senior executives polled said they telecommute frequently while 62 percent said they rarely or never telecommute.

“Telecommuting is definitely becoming more popular with certain career fields,” said Brandi Britton from San Jose-based Robert Half International Inc., the company that conducted the telecommuting survey. “Just don’t expect your boss to start doing it. Face time is still huge among management-level executives and they see being in the office and being available to employees as very crucial parts of their jobs.”

However, there still may be hope.

The study also found that while senior-level managers refuse to telecommute, staff members are actually encouraged by some managers to try it.
