Teamsters Sign New Contract With Ralphs

Kroger Co., the operator of Ralphs supermarkets, said Monday that seven International Brotherhood of Teamsters locals in Southern California ratified a new five-year contract.


The agreement covers about 3,200 truck drivers and warehouse workers who are members of Teamsters Locals 63, 166, 495, 572, 630, 848 and 952.


Late Monday, Vons announced that Teamsters Locals 495, 630 and 848 had approved a new five-year contract that covers 1,450 drivers, warehouse workers and mechanics in Southern California. A tentative agreement had been reached on Sept. 19, with the voting concluding on Sept. 24.


Kroger Co.’s Ralphs, Safeway Inc.’s Vons and Pavilions, and Albertsons Inc. are recovering and struggling to bring back customers lost during the 4 & #733;-month labor dispute at their southern California stores that was resolved in early 2004.


Cincinnati-based Kroger operates 2,515 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 32 states under two dozen local banners including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith’s, Fry’s, Dillons, QFC and City Market.
