Housing Construction Increases

Housing construction unexpectedly rose in September to the highest level in seven months, defying expectations of a slowdown in the booming housing market.


The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that construction of new homes and apartments rose by 3.4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.11 million units, the fastest pace since last February. Analysts had expected housing construction to decline by 1.7 percent in September.
