Motorola Inc. on Tuesday said that Vivendi Universal’s Universal Music Group has become the first company to make its music catalog available on a planned music service that will run on cell phones, computers and car stereos.

Users will be able to listen to songs on Motorola’s iRadio, which is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of next year, by artists including U2 and Sheryl Crow whose music is distributed by Santa Monica-based Universal Music. As of 2004, Universal had an estimated worldwide market share of 24.7 percent, the company said on its Web site.

Motorola’s iRadio will offer hundreds of channels of commercial-free music and talk stations. Consumers will also be able to create their own channels from their personal music collections, Motorola said in a statement. The service uses a high-speed Internet connection, Bluetooth technology and a mobile phone to offer listeners Internet radio stations at home, on car stereos and via mobile phones. Motorola announced the new service in mid-February.

Motorola introduced its Rokr phone last month, which holds 100 songs and runs Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes software.
