Port of L.A. Displaced as Top Gateway

New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport dislodged the Port of Los Angeles from the No. 1 position to become the top international freight gateway by value in 2004, the Department of Transportation announced Monday.


JFK handled $125.3 billion worth of imports and exports last year, compared with $121.4 billion for the Port of L.A. JFK was the No. 1 gateway for four years from 1999 to 2002, according to the department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.


The Port of Long Beach gained two positions in the top 10 ranking, moving to No. 3 in 2004 from No. 5 a year earlier, with $121.3 billion in exports and imports. Los Angeles International Airport remained seventh on the list, with $68.7 billion.


Nearly $2.3 trillion in U.S. exports and imports moved through more than 400 international freight gateways across the United States. The top-10 international freight gateways handled $954 billion, or 42 percent, of all U.S. international freight.
