Los Angeles-area gas prices continued creeping down from record levels set almost two months ago, slipping nearly 4 cents a gallon last week, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. They are now just 8 cents per gallon higher than they were a year ago.

The average gallon of self-serve regular in the Los Angeles area was $2.439 for the week ended May 23, down from $2.476 the previous week. L.A. gas prices are about 14 cents lower than they were one month ago.

Statewide gas prices dropped nearly 4 cents per gallon in the past week averaging $2.434 per gallon for the week ended May 23, but they are still nearly 11 cents higher than one year ago.

California was still the most expensive state in which to buy a gallon of gas, and San Francisco held onto the title of being the most expensive city, out-pricing Los Angeles for the second straight month with an average of $2.506 per gallon.

The lowest-priced state of the areas surveyed was Minnesota and the city with cheapest gas was Houston, at $1.935 and $1.983, respectively.
