For the fifth straight week, gasoline prices fell across Los Angeles and Southern California, a trend that shows every indication of continuing through the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Automobile Club of Southern California said.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area dipped 4.4 cents to $2.495 on Friday from $2.539 one week ago. The price was $2.617 per gallon one month ago, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

“Crude oil prices continue to decline and that’s reflected at gasoline pumps in Southern California,” said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. “It’s likely that we’ll see lower prices for the next few weeks, including the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which is the traditional kick off of the summer driving season.”

For the first Friday in months, the Bakersfield area had the lowest average price in Southern California, at $2.472, down 8.3 cents, beating Orange County which had the cheapest per-gallon price for six Fridays in a row. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area had the highest average local price, at $2.622.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m., May 20.
