Northrop Grumman Corp. said on Thursday that Boeing Co. awarded it a $3.2 billion multi-year contract to continue production on the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet strike fighter.

Some $650 million of the contract has been funded for fiscal-year 2005, with deliveries set to begin in 2006, Northrop said in a statement. This is Northrop Grumman’s second production contract for the program.

As the main F/A-18 subcontractor to Boeing, Northrop makes the fuselage and twin vertical tails and integrates all associated subsystems at its El Segundo facility. The company delivers the components to Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems facility in St. Louis for final assembly.

The F/A-18 program accounts for more than 1,400 jobs at Northrop in El Segundo and nearly 10,000 additional jobs at hundreds of other companies in California.
