Northrop to Cut 2,500 Jobs if Ship Spending Trimmed

Northrop Grumman Corp., the world’s largest builder of warships, said proposed Pentagon spending cuts would force it to eliminate 2,500 jobs at shipyards in Louisiana and Mississippi in the next three years

Northrop Ship Systems President Philip Dur said the current peak of employment can’t be sustained with the cuts the government is projecting.

A Pentagon budget document released Monday stated that L.A.-based Northrop Grumman, along with Lockheed Martin Corp., would bear the brunt of proposed cuts in U.S. weapons purchases totaling $30 billion over the next six years, according to various media reports.

Northrop has 125,000 employees, including nearly 20,000 at the Avondale shipyard in New Orleans, the Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi, and smaller plants in Gulfport, Miss. The cuts would most likely eliminate 2,500 workers from the Avondale and Ingalls shipyards.
