Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s biggest retailer, said on Monday it expects December sales to be up 3 percent, the top end of the company’s sales estimate, on better-than-expected post-Christmas spending.

The Bentonville, Ark.-based company had expected its December sales growth at stores open at least one year to be 1 percent to 3 percent.

Wal-Mart showed same-store sales growth of 0.7 percent for November. After disappointing post-Thanksgiving sales, the retailer cut prices on specific items and launched an ad blitz promoting the cuts.

Wal-Mart shares rose nearly 2 percent in late-morning trading.
