Update: Rain Likely Much of the Week

The rain that hit western Los Angeles County Monday morning as part of the powerful winter storm that brought periods of heavy rain and high wind to the area has shifted eastward for now.

Parts of Santa Clarita and Burbank were expected to be experiencing the brunt of the storm in the afternoon, leaving much of western L.A. relatively dry but windy and cold, with highs in the mid-50s.

L.A. isn’t in the clear yet, as potentially heavy showers, with a slight chance of thunderstorms, are in the forecast for Monday evening. Temperatures will most likely be the mid-30s to lower-40s.

Monday morning, several Los Angeles-area freeways were clogged due to flooded lanes and crashes. At one point, all southbound lanes of the Long Beach (710) Freeway were closed between Willow Street and the Pacific Coast Highway.

The flash flood warning remained in effect until 9:30 a.m. for Ventura County and Southwest Los Angeles County.

The storm, which moved into the area Sunday afternoon, was expected to linger through Monday before turning to showers by Tuesday afternoon. Occasional showers are expected through most of the week.

This latest storm has brought as much as 1.5 inches of rain to many parts of Southern California, including downtown L.A. For the season to date (beginning July 1), downtown L.A. has had close to 14 inches of rain, nearly the total amount for an average year.
