Circuit City Stores Inc., the number. two U.S. consumer electronics chain, said Tuesday it had received an unsolicited takeover offer for $3.25 billion, or $17 per share.

The proposal from Highfields Capital Management LP represents a 19.5-percent premium over Circuit City’s share price of $14.26 at the close of trading Monday.
