Bush Budget Kicks Off Debate in Congress

Republicans and Democrats in Congress began partisan arguments over President Bush’s $2.57 trillion budget that seeks deep spending cuts on many domestic programs from farm aid to housing grants for the poor in an effort to rein in soaring budget deficits.


While Republican lawmakers generally praised Bush’s budget for 2006, Democrats heaped scorn on the proposal.


Bush defended the spending blueprint, saying, “It’s a budget that focuses on results.”
