Holiday Shoppers Boost Sales

Sales at chain stores rose in the week before Christmas, retailers said on Wednesday, with last-minute shoppers and the late Hanukkah holiday boosting the bottom line.


Chain store sales were 2.8 percent higher in the week to December 24 after rising 2.4 percent in the prior week, according to a report by the International Council of Shopping Centers and UBS Securities LLC. In a separate report, Redbook Research, an independent research company, said sales at major retailers rose 4.5 percent on a year-over-year basis in the week ended December 24.
