Stocks Up for Second Straight Session

Stocks rose modestly for a second straight session Thursday as unemployment claims fell unexpectedly and consumer spending grew, if somewhat tepidly, without triggering inflation.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 55.71, or 0.5 percent, to 10,889.44. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 5.33, or 0.4 percent, to 1,268.12. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 14.83, or 0.7 percent, to 2,246.49.
