Higher oil prices and news of slowing growth in the service sector pulled stocks lower Monday despite some optimism over a $25 billion bid for Guidant Corp.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 42.50, or 0.4 percent, to 10,835.01.The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 2.99, or 0.2 percent, to 1,262.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index dipped 15.73, or 0.7 percent, to 2,257.64.
