Hallmark Channel May Get More Bids

Crown Media Holdings Inc. may receive a second round of bids for its Hallmark cable network before the holiday break, the New York Post reported.

The board of the Studio City-based company reviewed about six bids for its network late last week, including offers from Walt Disney Co., Time Warner Inc., Viacom Inc. and News Corp., the newspaper reported.

The network is distributed to just under 70 million subscribers and is programmed primarily with Hallmark original movies. It is expected to attract a price of around $1 billion, the Post said.

In mid-August, investors reacted positively to news that Crown Media Holdings may be for sale, sending its shares up more than 20 percent in one day. The company said it had formed a committee of board members to explore strategic alternatives for its business, including selling the channel or the entire company to a third party. The difficulty of running a stand-alone cable channel prompted the company to consider putting itself up for sale.
