Retailer Bargains Drive November Sales

Holiday bargains like laptop computers for under $400 drew U.S. shoppers out in droves in November, retailers reported on Thursday, but mall-based stores that held back on the discounts had quieter cash registers.


Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which offered the cheap laptops, confirmed Thursday that November sales rose 4.3 percent at its U.S. stores open at least a year. Department stores were among the laggards, with Nordstrom Inc. and Federated Department Stores Inc. both reporting weaker-than-expected sales, while a handful of apparel chains including Aeropostale Inc. that offered big discounts beat expectations.
