Former Mattel Executive Pleads Guilty to Federal Election Charges

A former senior vice president for Mattel Inc. who used his family members and associates to make political contributions with company funds pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of making false statements to the Federal Election Commission.

Fermin Cuza, who worked in international trade and government relations at the El Segundo-based toy maker, faces five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He already has paid a civil penalty of $188,000 in an agreement with the FEC.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, Cuza, who lives in Palm Desert, made $102,214 in contributions to 31 federal campaign committees between March 1997 and November 2000.

The contributions were made by his family members and associates, while a company created by Cuza sent invoices to Mattel for the dollar value of the contributions and related expenses. Those invoices reimbursed Cuza and his family members for the contributions.

The campaign committees that received those contributions reported them to the FEC as individual donations, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
