L.A. Gas Prices Creep Up

Gasoline prices rose in Los Angeles and throughout Southern California over the past week, but lower costs for crude oil and stability in the wholesale gas market indicate that pump prices may be nearing a peak, the Automobile Club of Southern California said.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Los Angeles jumped 8.2 cents to $2.623 on Friday from $2.541 one week ago. The price was $2.333 per gallon one month ago, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

“For the first time this month, some areas have seen prices back off their all-time record highs set this week. Prices may rise again, but declines in the cost of crude oil and stability on the wholesale gasoline market indicate that gasoline may be near its peak,” said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp.

The Los Angeles-Long Beach area was slightly off its record price of $2.625, set two days earlier, on April 13, and Riverside-San Bernardino just missed its April 13 record of $2.649, chiming in at $2.648.

For the second Friday in a row, the lowest average price in Southern California was in Orange County, where regular was selling for $2.602. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area reported the highest average local price, at $2.727.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m., April 15.
