LABJ FORUM – Time Off

Summer’s here, the kids are out of school and most folks are getting ready to take some time off from work, enjoy a trip, get together with friends and relatives, or just relax. So the Business Journal asks:

How will you spend your summer vacation?

I actually had some plans for August but we’re going to have to cancel them and reschedule. My son went out for football and that’s when the main practices are. Sometimes we just get in the car and drive. My kids love to go fishing. We go fishing in the Eastern Sierras.

I’m chairman of the Surfrider Foundation’s Malibu chapter. We’re leaving to La Fonda, Baja, Mexico for a three-day surfing trip. There’s about 25 members and staff and we’re going to enjoy three days of surfing and relaxation and building a little camaraderie. For several years now, we’ve been really concentrating on environmental issues, but at our last executive planning meeting, we decided we wanted to focus more attention on the sport of surfing. There’s a Southern Hemisphere swell now that brings good waves, so the surfing should be good.

I’m going to Vegas for a convention and to Puerto Vallarta for a wedding. The trip to Puerto Vallarta is for four days. I’m planning a trip to Africa for me and eight friends in January. I can’t go to Africa in the summer because it’s the busiest time for us. I’ve been probably 18 times. Sometimes it’s more enjoyable to go somewhere besides Africa, since it’s not business related.

I’ll be helping run the world’s largest wholesale soulmate trading outlet at the Burning Man Arts Festival in Black Rock City, Nev., outside of Reno. It’s the last week of August. My soulmate matching camp is about 40 people. We run a service where people are interviewed and fill out a form and our computer matches them to their soulmate; they are offered free drinks in the bar while they wait. We match about 4,000 people in a week.

I’m riding my bike back to North Carolina. I ride a 2003 Harley Electraglide. I’m president of the American Cruisers Alliance motorcycle club chapter and I’m going to a club-wide meeting and I’m also having a family reunion. This year will only be two weeks. Last year I did the trip in 21 days. We’re a 501(C)(3) charitable organization and we raise money for Lupus awareness and children’s charities. I primarily insure motorcyclists. That allows me to stay within my peer group.

I won a cruise on Crystal Cruises, first class. The only thing that I’ve ever won before is a turkey, so I’m pretty excited. I’m going for seven days in October to the Caribbean. We’re going to Key West, Cozumel in Mexico and then to Nassau and Freeport in the Grand Bahamas. It will just be me and somebody else, I don’t know who I’m going to take yet.

My husband, daughter and I are hoping to escape to beautiful Maine for about 10 days in August. I have family in New England so it’s going to be perfect. The weather is not as nice as California, it’s humid, but at least there’s going to be that sea breeze. In the past we’ve gone to the Caribbean and Hawaii. I did Europe a lot, but that was before I had my daughter. Now we do more places that are for families.
