L.A. Times: Plan to Cut Port Smog to Be Released

Plans to reduce pollution at the Los Angeles port complex, including fuel restrictions for ships and trucks, will be released this week, the Los Angeles Times said.

Experts from the port and state and federal air-quality agencies will recommend using new power sources for ships docked in the port or idling near the shore. The local, state and federal experts also may recommend a trade-in program to replace older trucks used at the port.

Other ideas may include state or federal legislation regarding restrictions on fuels for ships and trucks.

Efforts to reduce pollution at the Los Angeles port, the busiest U.S. sea port, could be a model for other ports dealing with an increase of shipping fueled by imports from Asia, the Times said.
