L.A. City Council Bill Targets Hotels Going Condo

0

Los Angeles City Council members will consider a proposal Wednesday that is supported by organized labor to block developers from converting hotels to condominiums for the next six months. Some in the business community are against the idea.

Supporters say the proposed moratorium is needed to stem the trend of eliminating hotel rooms , and union jobs , at a time when the local hospitality industry is finally improving.

L.A. also is facing record demand for housing, and the owners of at least four hotels are considering converting all or part of their properties to residential use:

These hotels include the St. Regis in Century City, the Westin Bonaventure in downtown, one of downtown’s two Holiday Inns and the Furama Hotel near LAX. Union leaders fear that at least two other downtown hotels may be going condo as well.
