In an effort to bolster its L.A. presence, USBX Advisory Services LLC has hired Brooks Dexter, 44, as managing director. The two-year-old mergers and acquisitions advisory firm represents both buyers and sellers in all aspects of their transactions.

Besides managing staff, Dexter will be charged with building the firm’s presence in the local M & A; market.

“Los Angeles is one of the premier (locations) for middle market transactions by virtue of the diversity of the economy and the size of the businesses in the geographic region,” said Dexter. “We intend to grow our business by adding a degree of professionalism that generally isn’t seen by buyers and sellers in that range.

“The middle market M & A; business is very much an under-served business,” he said. “There are only a few fully-licensed firms that target transactions in the $10 million $100 million size.”

Dexter said he expects the company to close between four and six transactions by the end of 2001 totaling between $50 million and $75 million.

“As large investment banks have continued to consolidate, they’ve moved away from this market,” said Dexter.

He takes over for USBX Chief Executive John E. Mack who had been running the subsidiary since its inception.

Based in Santa Monica, Dexter is responsible for all facets of day-to-day operations, managing 15 professionals located in Los Angeles, Orange County and Dallas.

A New Jersey native, Dexter has lived in Los Angeles for more than 20 years. He received his undergraduate and MBA degrees from the University of Chicago before kicking off his career at First Boston Corp. in New York.

Since then, Dexter has served as a managing director in the Los Angeles office of Lehman Brothers and, for the five years prior to accepting his current position, a senior investment banker with J.P. Morgan & Co. in Los Angeles.

A resident of Manhattan Beach, Dexter is married with two children, aged 9 and 11.
