LABJ Forum—Shopping for a Computer

0

The pricetag for personal computers has been on a steady decline as of late, much to the chagrin of the major manufacturers. But while profit margins are down, the technology continues to advance. Though it seems like a good time to get a great deal, many consumers are happy with what they already have. So the Business Journal asks:

Are you in the market for a new PC?

Yes. We need to buy a new workstation for our intern, we’ve just been making do with the PC that we have. The prices are so good that it makes sense for us to upgrade. The last one we bought was an IBM, but we’re not really loyal to any one brand. It’s more about hard drive space, processor speed and the extras such as a DVD player. So it’s like a cost comparison more than any kind of brand loyalty. We research online and also go to stores. But, we’ll probably buy online because it seems like the best price is always (available) online.

No, I use a Mac. I have 27 computers at the company I own. I’m computered out. I’ve got the newest G3’s, G4’s, Imacs and the part of my company that likes to use PC’s is also OK. So I think everything’s fine. I have all the memory I need, I moved my offices a month ago and (in the process) upgraded everything. But since we’re leasing, it should be easy to change up if necessary.

I’m not in the market quite yet, but I very well could be soon. My computer is a Hewlett-Packard and it’s been giving me a little bit of trouble lately, so if it continues I may need to investigate the possibility of getting a new one. If HP and Compaq merge, I’m thinking maybe the end result will be a stronger product all around. We’ll just have to wait and see.

No, I’m not. I pretty much only use my work computer. I don’t have a computer at home and I don’t really want one there. I imagine I’m in the minority, but that’s fine.

I’m looking for one for my son who’s going to college in about a year and a half. My work provides a really powerful computer that I use for personal reasons as well as work. Because I have such a great work computer, I haven’t paid much attention to the one I have at home. The prices are starting to look interesting. I’ve been looking at the sales papers that come tucked into your newspaper and maybe by Christmas the prices will get down to the price point I’m looking at. I’d like to get a new computer pretty soon and then ship my son off to college with it in a year or so. By that time it will probably be time to upgrade again. It seems like you have to upgrade every year.
