LABJ Forum—Setting Year-End Goals

0

Summer’s over, and it’s back to school time. Before you know it, the holiday season will be upon us, with its whirlwind of obligations, and then 2001 will be history. As the months slip by, setting goals can be helpful in getting things accomplished before year-end. So the Business Journal asks:

What’s the one thing you want to get accomplished before the year’s end?

For a lawyer, the end of December is the consummate Friday. Every client at the end of the year wants to dump their desk on their lawyer while they go on vacation. So when that’s over, it’s my turn to go on vacation. Most people like the six weeks between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. For me, that’s my busiest time, so I’d just like to get through to January, when I’m less busy and I can go skiing.

Probably two things. Professionally, I’d like to find the cargo that a major client of ours had stolen. One of our large clients had a great deal of their merchandise stolen. I’d really like to either find the perpetrator or find the cargo. We have a few leads and I believe we’re going to crack the case before Christmas. On the personal side, I’d like to increase the amount of volunteer work I do in the community. I don’t feel like I’ve spent enough time volunteering. I’ve planned on spending time the past year working with community development organizations. I had a new baby this year, so I haven’t been able to dedicate enough free or weekend time.

I guess I’d like to straighten out my finances. I really need to take a second look at my mutual funds. I’ve been procrastinating about getting a will in place, a living trust, that sort of thing. It’s not that I have a terminal disease or anything. I’d just really like to get things in order.

I recently wrote a book that deals with obesity and health-related issues. My energies coming into the fall have been pretty much to get out and promote my book and at the same time bring public awareness to childhood and adult obesity issues. Going into the holiday season and after the New Year there is obviously a business opportunity in letting people know about these issues. So my goals are to increase book sales and online subscribers to my Web site.

I just recently had my first child, which happens to be a son. I also just recently went into escrow on a piece of property that I intend to build a house on. By the end of the year I’d like to be well into the construction of the house, weather permitting. So I guess what I’m hoping to achieve by the end of the year is managing to make that transition to building a home while maintaining my relationship with my family.
