Media—Publisher Leaves Weeklies to Form Consulting Firm

Judy Jablonski will step down as publisher of the LA Weekly and OC Weekly on Dec. 14 to open a local media and consulting firm. “It’s just time to dream some new dreams,” she said.

Jablonski joined the LA Weekly 18 years ago and became associate publisher in 1995. That year, she helped launch the OC Weekly. She has served as publisher of the alternative weeklies since January 2000.

Through her new company, Magpye Media, Jablonski will serve as a consultant for the two weeklies, assisting with marketing and special projects.

Michael Sigman, president of the weeklies, will take on the additional role of publisher following Jablonski’s departure.

Internal and external candidates were being considered for the post of associate publisher, a post that has gone unfilled since Jablonski became publisher.


Work Section Replaced

The Los Angeles Times replaced its year-old Work Place section last week with CareerBuilder as part of an effort to promote a Web-based recruitment service backed by its parent company Tribune Co. and Knight Ridder Inc.

The two media companies have long been working to expand their influence in the recruitment market. To further CareerBuilder’s reach, Tribune and Knight Ridder pledged to change the recruitment sections of their newspapers to CareerBuilder classifieds.

Work Place’s two reporters and one editor will continue covering business at the paper, said Times spokesman David Garcia.


New Network Delayed

The nation’s second largest Spanish-language television network has delayed the launch of a second network.

Telemundo Communications Group Inc. pushed the launch of “mun2,” a cable network targeted at younger Latinos, from Sept. 19 to Oct. 10 following the terrorist attacks on the East Coast.

The Daily News of Los Angeles is looking for stories from readers.

In celebration of its 90th birthday, the paper has been asking readers to submit anecdotes about the publication and the history of the San Fernando Valley for a special pull-out section that will come out on Oct. 11. The paper began as the Van Nuys Call on Oct. 13, 1911, and did not become the Daily News until 1979.

Features Editor Sharyn Betz said she has received hundreds of responses, ranging from old wedding announcements to a former employee who brought in samples of the “hot type” once used to print the paper.
