Newsmakers—Credit Counselor Expects Business Boost

The volatile mix of a slowing economy and greater restrictions on bankruptcy filings is likely to keep Peter F. Lake, the new president and CEO of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Los Angeles, very busy in the coming months.

After 20 years of senior-level financial services management, most recently as executive vice president and western group regional manager for Fleet Capital Corp., Lake is prepared for the challenge.

“We haven’t seen a significant increase (in clients), but the first signs are there.

“And for a number of people, bankruptcy will not be an option,” he says. “Services like ours will be required to establish whether or not the debtors are capable (of paying off their debts). In effect, less people will be able to avoid repaying they’re creditors.”

Lake said that roughly 25 percent of CCCS-L.A.’s clients are in debt-management programs, in which CCCS-L.A. negotiates a payment plan on behalf of a debtor, usually working out more favorable terms, such as a reduced interest rate or extended payment terms. The balance of the not-for-profit agency’s clients receives debt counseling.

Lake expects that balance to shift in the near future, with more clients needing to go into a debt-management program.

In the future, Lake said, he plans to implement more proactive programs to help clients avoid the use of a debt-management program. “We will be looking for opportunities to work in partnership with corporations to provide services that will result in better educated and informed consumer,” he says.

As for the change from the corporate banking environment to the not-for-profit world, Lake has already noticed a difference.

“Aside from anything else, there’s a tremendous sense of satisfaction from the sense of socially responsible services that we provide,” he says.
