SPOTLIGHT ON HESPERIA

Recent studies and trends reveal that the primary concern of companies looking for areas to relocate or expand is the available pool of labor. It is this trait, coincidentally, that is Hesperia’s strongest.

Each day thousands of Hesperia residents get in their cars and travel to jobs throughout the Los Angeles basin. Round-trip commutes of a hundred miles a day or more are not uncommon. Those commuters are anxious to trade that daily commute for a job closer to their home and family. Businesses seeking loyal, productive employers need look no further than Hesperia.

A recent labor market analysis conducted by a nationally recognized site selection firm indicated that wage rates in the Hesperia region are $.75 per hour less than those commanded by employees in the greater Los Angeles area. With high education levels, little union activity, significantly lower wage rates and a large commuting population, our workforce makes us even more irresistible.

Another aspect of Hesperia’s superior Southern California location is the convenience of being only a short drive from downtown Los Angeles. Any point in Southern California, from the Mexican border to Santa Barbara, is a two-hour drive or less. Yet Hesperia has the advantage of being outside the South Coast Air Quality Management District and its strict regulations.

Whether you’re searching for a new home for your business or your family, the City of Hesperia offers a rich mixture of big time opportunity and hometown hospitality. Perched on the edge of Southern California’s traffic-congested urban centers, Hesperia is a quiet alternative away from the crowds and crime.

Relocating and expanding businesses will find a city with more than 63,000 residents, a developed infrastructure and an unbeatable climate. Uniquely positioned in the growing High Desert/Inland Empire market of Southern California, Hesperia is strategically located along the Interstate 15 corridor between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In addition to an excellent labor pool, Hesperia possesses wide expanses of inexpensive land, affordable housing and a pro-business City Council and staff.

The City Council and Economic Development Department, headed by Steven Lantsberger, have implemented a number of programs to encourage growth and promote new capital investment.

“We offer numerous incentives to companies looking to relocate to, or expand, in Hesperia,” explained Lantsberger. “Investment tax credits, property and sales tax rebates, subsidized employee training, industrial development and expeditious planning and permitting processes are just a few of the attractions that make Hesperia so alluring.”

With two expansive redevelopment areas the city is able to reduce or “comp” city fees, and effectively utilize tax increment for development incentives. The flexibility afforded by these programs allows city staff to tailor an inducement package specific to a client’s needs, which can reduce construction and occupancy costs, resulting in greater productivity and increased profitability.

Transportation demands are easily served by highway, rail and air. Bisected by Interstate 15, and bordered by U.S. Highway 395, many imported goods from Southern California’s ports pass through Hesperia on their way east. These highways also provide direct connections to other major interstates and highways serving the greater Los Angeles, San Diego, Northern California, and Nevada markets. Interstate 15 also connects to Interstate 40, which serves the southwestern states, including Arizona, New Mexico and beyond.

Nearby rail service is provided by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, Southern California’s two dominant rail carriers, as well as Amtrak. Air travel is an easy 45-mile drive away to the newly expanded Ontario International Airport, which provides passenger and cargo service. Air cargo can also be shipped via the Southern California International Airport, which is only 15 miles away.

Hesperia’s “pro-business” attitude has paid big dividends in recent years in terms of business development. Heilig-Meyers, recognizing the convenience of Hesperia’s strategic location, made the decision to locate their 500,000 square foot distribution/customer service center within the city in 1997. Their new distribution center serves 143 stores located in a vast eleven-state territory. Vydac, a worldwide leader in the production of materials for high speed liquid chromatography, as well as Dial Precision, C & M; Wood Products, Rite Aid and Auto Zone are just a few of the companies that have made significant investments within the city in the past few years.

Of course business is only one of Hesperia’s many attributes. It’s setting in the beautiful high country features a picturesque backdrop provided by the San Bernardino mountains. Hesperia’s high desert climate embraces all four seasons, with sunshine and sparkling clean air evident in all of them.

For recreation, a short drive can take you to ski resorts with snow-covered slopes or the sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean. The possibilities are as varied as the terrain: fishing at Hesperia Lake Park, waterskiing at Lake Silverwood, a hike through Desert Preserves or a simple picnic enjoyed while watching the hot air balloon races at Mojave Narrows Regional Park.

Since settlers first discovered the Mojave River, and Hesperia area, horses have played an important role in the area’s history. Large lot sizes, wide-open spaces, and low property prices have encouraged the tradition to continue. Sprawling ranch style homes are often surrounded by grazing thoroughbreds.

For those who desire more formal or executive style housing, Hesperia offers a wide variety of custom homes, whether nestled among the fairways of Hesperia Country Club, overlooking beautiful Hesperia Lake or positioned on the Hesperia bluffs to best catch the vibrant desert sunsets and mountain views. Combine all this with a powerful sense of community, excellent schools and a low crime rate and you have a city any person would be proud to call home.
