The Los Angeles Business Journal won the top award, for overall excellence, in its category at the Greater Los Angeles Press Club’s 1996 Southern California Journalism Awards.

The Business Journal received the top honor among weekly, twice-weekly and monthly publications in the L.A. area, based on the issue of Dec. 16, 1996. The judging was based on a variety of factors, including comprehensive news coverage, features, columns and layout. The Business Journal was cited in particular for its intensive local reporting and strong writing.

Winner of the overall excellence award in the category of daily newspapers with circulation over 100,000 was the Los Angeles Times.

Entries cited at the awards ceremony, held April 19 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown L.A., were judged by press clubs throughout the country.

Also recognized at the ceremony was Business Journal Staff Reporter Dan Turner, who won an Award of Excellence for business news reporting for his Nov. 4 story, “City mags battle for L.A.” That story chronicled the competition between Los Angeles and Buzz magazines.
