New DSL Technology Lets You Browse the Web Twenty Times Faster!

By Drew J. Kaplan

Until now, the Phone Company has been charging thousands of dollars per month for T-1 data line to the Internet. This is about to change as Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) technology is being deployed throughout Southern California. DSL lines allow high-speed data transport over traditional twisted-pair copper wires, just like a T-1. In other words, DSL allows you to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) over a regular telephone line at speeds that are much faster than those achieved using an analog 56Kbps modem or ISDN line. DSL is establishing an entirely new point on the price/performance curve.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology uses existing copper telephone wiring to deliver high-speed data services to businesses and homes. In its various forms – including ADSL, IDSL and SDSL – DSL offers users a choice of speeds ranging from 144 Kbps to more than 1.5 Mbps. These digital services will ultimately be used to deliver bandwidth-intensive applications like video on demand and distance learning. More immediately, for the first time, DSL is putting high-speed Internet access within the reach of small and medium-size businesses. These businesses can now afford to have their employees telecommute from home.

DSL service allows corporate employees or “tele-workers” who work at home on a part-time, full-time, or after hour’s basis to enjoy similar response times as their in-office counterparts when transferring files, accessing the web or downloading presentations. At its top speed, the DSL service is up to 20 times faster than most dial-up modem connections and 10 times faster than ISDN. And unlike dial-up services, there is no wait to connect and no busy signals. Once installed, the high-speed connection is always on and available, just as it is for an employee working in the office.
