Auction Jab Missed Point

For the record, more than $275,000 was raised from Los Angeles’ business and corporate sectors for Big Sisters of Los Angeles (BSLA) and its services for at-risk girls and young women, through the recent gala sponsored by BSLA’s Professional Associates. We honored four outstanding female business leaders who are the chief financial officers of their respective corporations.

Too bad the Los Angeles Business Journal focused solely on the event’s silent auction, criticizing the wide variety of items which appealed to and raised funds from the women and men at the dinner (“Sister Act,” L.A. Stories, May 4).

This snide article missed the point of the event entirely. It ignored the inspirational speeches by our honorees about the value of having a role model and mentor. And it dismissed the hard-working efforts of the women and men who generously donated their time and services to make the evening such a success.

True success is not just about making a profit, it is also about investing in and giving back to the community. We at Big Sisters are enriched by the men and women who are our volunteers and donors.
