David Lubars doesn’t mind if his name doesn’t jump out at you. It’s his work that he wants to jump out at you.

Lubars who this month was promoted to chief executive officer and chief creative officer of BBDO West, one of the 10 largest advertising firms in L.A. County heads the agency responsible for award-winning ad campaigns for Apple Computer, Pioneer Electronics, Glendale Federal Bank and L.A. Cellular.

The commercial with the man in the convertible shaking a bridge with his Pioneer sound system was handled by BBDO as was the Glendale Federal radio spot with the woman complaining about long lines and other hassles at her bank.

Lubars, 38, joined BBDO West in 1993 as an executive vice president and executive creative director. Prior to his latest promotion, he was president and executive creative director of BBDO West.

His time in Los Angeles including a stint at TBWA Chiat/Day Inc. has been markedly different from the East Coast advertising environment where he received his early training, Lubars says.

On the East Coast, “your competitors are across the street,” he says. “In L.A., you’re so spread out that you don’t know what your competition’s doing until you show up at a convention.”

Lubars works off the stress of running a high-powered ad agency by playing basketball with “young junior college graduates who injure me a lot” and by playing guitar in a band with other ad executives.

When asked what type of songs ad execs play, Lubars says, “Bad ones.”
